From May 14 to August 17, 2025, the Musée national de la Marine in Paris offers an immersive exploration of the maritime world from the mid-19th century to the present day through a dual photographic exhibition: "Jean Gaumy et la mer" et "La pêche au-delà du cliché, inédits de la collection".
This exhibition highlights the work of Jean Gaumy, a prominent figure in contemporary photography, member of Magnum Photos, the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and official painter of the Navy. It is the first major exhibition of Gaumy's maritime photographs, presenting over 140 prints from the collection of the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie.
The exhibition showcases Gaumy's intense and diverse portrayal of maritime themes, including deep-sea fishing, open sea, oil spill disasters, the confined life aboard submarines, and polar exploration. His photographs span locations from Normandy to Greenland, Andalusia, and Long Island, transitioning from documentary reportage to contemplative poetry and abstraction. The "Gaumy style" is revealed through both iconic and previously unseen photographs.
About Jean Gaumy
Born in 1948 in Pontaillac, Jean Gaumy began his career with the photo agencies Viva and Gamma before joining Magnum Photos in 1977, becoming a full member in 1986. Since the early 1970s, he has traveled the world, covering international news and immersing himself in various environments, from hospitals and French prisons to fishing communities and submarines. In recent years, he has photographed the Cordouan lighthouse and Monet's gardens in Giverny. His most renowned works focus on deep-sea fishing and post-revolutionary Iran.
Gaumy has directed several documentaries, including "La Boucane" (1984), "Jean-Jacques" (1987), "Marcel, prêtre" (1994), and "Sous-marin" (2006), and has published various books. Appointed official painter of the Navy in 2008, he was elected to the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in 2018.
