From May 14 to August 17, 2025, the Musée national de la Marine in Paris offers an immersive exploration of the maritime world from the mid-19th century to the present day through a dual photographic exhibition: "Jean Gaumy et la mer" et "La pêche au-delà du cliché, inédits de la collection".
About the Exhibition
This exhibition reveals how the sea and fishing communities have been perceived by photographers from the mid-19th century to the early 21st century, through nearly 130 pieces from the museum's collection, some of which are being presented to the public for the first time.
Designed as a journey through the museum's rich photographic collection, the exhibition documents how the sea and fishing communities have been viewed from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century. It features works by well-known photographers like Anita Conti, Lucien Chauffard, Emmanuel Ortiz, and Serge Lucas, as well as lesser-known artists. Prints, albums, printed brochures, slides, and negatives highlight the diverse perspectives on this demanding profession. By situating the objects within their historical context, the exhibition invites visitors to identify what characterizes fishing photography, exploring subject choices, technical evolutions, and photographers' approaches to their subjects.

Dual exhibition
By bringing together two photographic collections with complementary worlds, the dual exhibition "Jean Gaumy et la mer" and “La pêche au-delà du cliché, inédits de la collection” offers a captivating look at the daily lives of seafaring people from the 19th century to the present day.

Jean Gaumy et la mer
This exhibition highlights the work of Jean Gaumy, a prominent figure in contemporary photography, member of Magnum Photos, the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and official painter of the Navy. It is the first major exhibition of Gaumy's maritime photographs, presenting over 140 prints from the collection of the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie.
