Library

Collections

The collection's original function was to respond to the strictly educational needs of medical instruction built around hands-on proficiency. It evolved over time to match the intellectual level of ships' surgeons as they continued to extend the scope of their skills.

Now endowed with some 25,000 works, the library is a first-class source of references on the evolution of naval medicine: treatises on maritime and tropical diseases, accounts of voyages, improvement of onboard living conditions, sanitation services in the colonies, etc. Daily life is also represented through first-hand accounts by doctors and surgeons, logbooks, etc.
